Outline

WEEK 1
Learn the different types of content you can produce with InDesign, explore the workspace and tools, and get right to work on your first project. Then, learn how to use the specific colors, styles, and logos as well as choose settings for a new file, add background images, and organize your content to create a custom letterhead and matching envelope.

WEEK 2
Understand how to use a workflow, or an order of operations for creating an InDesign publication and go over how to organize materials on a page using tools for aligning, organizing, and laying out your content. Then, get hands-on experience designing a catalog layout as you learn how to create documents with multiple pages and different layouts.

WEEK 3
Learn different methods for adding text to your publication and how to check your text for typos and errors. Then, learn everything you need to know about working with images—adding them to the page in different ways, adjusting their positions, and using various commands for coordinating their sizes, proportions, and frames.

WEEK 4
Learn how to work with some of the drawing tools to draw several simple shapes and stack them using blend modes for interesting effects. You’ll also learn how to use text wrap to make text follow the shapes of various objects. Then, learn the best methods for choosing, naming, and organizing colors in your documents. Explore the tools available for designing and formatting tables to help you make sure your content will coordinate with other documents. Then, see how to use the 3R’s of recycling in InDesign to complete a new projects.

WEEK 6
Learn how to export a publication as an image, print directly from your desktop, or create a compact PDF version of your finished publication ready to email. Then, dig into color separations—a common method of preparing a file for a professional print shop. And finally, try out special layout tools for producing alternate page layouts of different sizes in the same document.

  • Adobe InDesign CS6 (Windows), Adobe CS6 Design and Web Premium (Windows), Adobe CS6 Master Collection (Windows), InDesign CS6 (Mac), Adobe CS6 Design and Web Premium (Mac), Adobe CS6 Master Collection (Mac), or Adobe CC may also be used (Mac or Windows).

WHEN CAN I GET STARTED?
A new session of each course opens each month, allowing you to enroll whenever your busy schedule permits!

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Once a session starts, two lessons will be released each week, for the six-week duration of your course. You will have access to all previously released lessons until the course ends.

HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO COMPLETE EACH LESSON?
The interactive discussion area for each lesson automatically closes 2 weeks after each lesson is released, so you’re encouraged to complete each lesson within two weeks of its release.

WHAT IF I NEED AN EXTENSION?
The Final Exam will be released on the same day as the last lesson. Once the Final Exam has been released, you will have 2 weeks plus 10 days to complete the Final and finish any remaining lessons in your course. No further extensions can be provided beyond these 10 days.
