In this first lesson, you will find out why WordPress is the world’s most popular Web publishing platform and how it helps non-technical people create good-looking, dynamic websites. You will learn what it takes to set up a self-hosted WordPress site, including how to choose a domain name, find a hosting company, and access your piece of the World Wide Web.

SETTING UP YOUR WORDPRESS WEBSITE
It’s time to get your website set up. This lesson teaches you will learn how to manage website files, configure some basic settings, and take a tour of the WordPress administrative area. This lesson also covers how to organize your site so that your visitors will get the most out of it.

WORDPRESS THEMES: BRINGING YOUR WEBSITE TO LIFE
A WordPress theme gives your website a professionally designed look and installs with a single mouse click. Lesson 3 focuses on how themes work, where to find them, and how to install them. This lesson introduces the theme you will use for the class website project and also compares free and paid themes.

CREATING PAGES, POSTS, AND MENUS
Explore the basics of HTML and CSS coding language, and you’ll quickly discover how to change font styles, sizes, and colors; create lists; and work with margins. Then you’ll continue customizing your website by finding out more ways to change the way your site looks, creating a custom WordPress theme without learning the basic scripting language, and setting up widgets.

This lesson is all about organizing written content. You will learn how to enter and organize the information your visitors are looking for, and how to create pages and posts. You will also find out how to put together a custom menu to guide your guests around the site.

SITE WORK AND SOCIAL NETWORKING
This lesson focuses on the details that make your website stand out. You will learn how to create a consistent style and set up an eye-catching slide show on your home page. This lesson also covers how to market your site using social networking plugins designed for WordPress.

Prerequisites / Requirements

Prerequisites:
To take this course, you should have at least some blog or website publishing experience and good computer skills. Otherwise, we recommend the introductory course, Creating WordPress Websites.

Hardware Requirements:

  • This course can be taken on either a PC or Mac device.

Software Requirements:

  • PC: Windows XP or later.
  • Mac: OS X Snow Leopard 10.6 or later.
  • Browser: The latest version of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, or Safari (We recommend Firefox or Chrome).
  • WordPress software is free, but in order to use it, you must have a paid account with a hosting company, which costs approximately $100 a year. The course includes a free 90-day hosting account from SiteGround, which includes a temporary practice site (this is not available for students who took advantage of this offer in the introductory WordPress class).

WHEN CAN I GET STARTED?
Instructor-led: A new session of each course begins each month. Please refer to the session start dates for scheduling.

Self-Paced: Start your course at any time your schedule permits.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Instructor-led: Once a session starts, two lessons will be released each week, for the 6 week duration of your course. You will have access to all previously released lessons until the course ends.

Self-Paced: You can start your course at anytime, review all lessons in any order, and learn and complete the course at your own pace, within the 3 month access period.

HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO COMPLETE EACH LESSON?
Instructor-led: The interactive discussion area for each lesson automatically closes 2 weeks after each lesson is released, so you’re encouraged to complete each lesson within two weeks of its release.

Self-Paced: There is no time limit to complete each lesson, other than completing all lessons before your 3 month duration of access ends.

WHAT IF I NEED AN EXTENSION?
Instructor-led: The Final Exam will be released on the same day as the last lesson. Once the Final Exam has been released, you will have 2 weeks plus 10 days to complete the Final and finish any remaining lessons in your course. No further extensions can be provided beyond these 10 days.

Self-Paced: No extensions will be granted since all lessons are accesable at the start of your enrollment, for the full 3 months of access.
